My name is Lewis Randall Garvin and my wonderful wife of 28 years is Sheila. I served in the U.S. Air Force as an Avionic Navigation Systems Specialist (AFSC 3283#). I was injured in an accident while repairing the Search Radar on a KC-135 and a year later was released from active duty to the VA for compensation. I met Sheila, in 1978 at a 'Dance Marathon' that I chaired for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. We were married the next year. We had eight children all of them born between 1980 to 1989 and as of now we have one granddaughter. I have worked as a federal civil servant at the Naval Aviation Depot in Pensacola, Florida from 1977 to 1994 when the DOD Base Closures ended my employment. I was suddenly without a viable source of income. My Service Connected Disability became worse in 1988 to the point of being put into a wheelchair. From 1994 to the present I personally have been financially dependant on the government (VA). I can only hope to stay just above poverty. Until now! With dedication and positive people around me Sheila is on way to financial independence. Sheila would like to offer this same opportunity to others. There are so many of you out there with similar stories; it is you that Sheila is appealing to. Some days it seems just impossible to get out of bed. Or it feels like the whole world is coming down on you. I see a light at the end of the tunnel for Sheila; and it's not the headlight of a freight train! It is financial independence and a time when you can stop waiting for the 'bureaucracy' to provide for you. Whether you were a guidon bearer, squad leader or commander, this opportunity will give you freedom. All of us who join together will make the team. The training that we received in the military has enabled us to work as a team and accomplish our mission.
